Well, I’ve finally finished my Sax in the City series, at long last!

A project of six saxy oil paintings that took six months to complete. Phew…

They are all oil paintings on stretched 61cm x 91cm canvas, created entirely using a knife, on a common theme of soulful, melodic, freestyle sax players… All in the same style, technique and with lots of emotion, passion and perspective overload to capture the performance!

Pour a cold glass of something sparkling, close your eyes, turn up the volume and you can join them…

Expressive Sax – 1955
Soul Jazz – 1955
Henry (Hank) Mobley – Based in Philadelphia, born in 1930 and died in 1986 aged 55. A hard bop, soul Jazz tenor Saxophonist having a laid-back, subtle and melodic style.

Freedom in Sax – 1965
Sam Rivers. Based in Boston, born in 1923 and died in 2011 aged 88. A bebop derived ‘inside-out’ free jazz advocate… Here he’s playing Soprano Saxophone and Sam played several instruments in addition. Pure passion!

Casual Sax – 1964
John Gilmore. Born in 1933 and died in 1995 ages 63. A Bebop derived avant-garde jazz and free jazz tenor saxophonist.

Wayne Shorter – Born in New Jersey in 1933. A post bop, hard bop, crossover jazz, 10 time Grammy award winning tenor and soprano Saxophonist having a powerfully emotive style. He recorded with Herbie Hancock, Joni Mitchell and performed exquisite solos on Steely Dan’s Aja and Don Henley’s The End of Innocence. The Master composer… Described by The New York Times as probably jazz’s greatest living small-group composer and a contender for greatest living improviser.

Starving Artist, burning the midnight oil and candle at both ends... The style of my artwork is modern, yet classical. Predominantly figurative, the tendency of my artwork is towards carefully composed anonymity, capturing the emotions and self belief of the subject, rather than characteristic individual representation. The creation of figurative artwork not only depicts the emotions of the artist, it transforms the artist's emotions. Art should be proudly displayed, carefully scrutinized, and in order to benefit to the fullest extent possible, it should be understood from the perspective of its creator - the artist. My figurative artwork is sensual and my ballerinas and dancers are passionate, moody and emotional. My preferred lighting, shading and contrast are dramatic. I simply adore light and am fascinated with its arguably undue influence on any subject. I delve extensively between the extremes of highlights and lowlights in my artwork in a chiaroscuro technique, occasionally minimalist, often leaving the viewer's mind to complete the picture and to add depth. I always strive to create an atmosphere in whatever I produce, at the highest possible quality and using either a knife or brush and a very limited colour palette of oil paint or pastels, usually alla prima, mixing and blending only on the canvas!
